October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month


Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in 1981 with the National
Coalition Against Violence Day of Unity. The intent was to bring
together battered women’s advocates from across the country who were dedicated to ending violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were held at the local, state and national levels.

The Domestic Violence Advocacy Council (DVAC) has organized several events throughout October to recognize national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Events include free training sessions and a candlelight vigil.  Check out the schedule of events online at 2009 DVAM Calendar of Events:
