Suicide Primer: Signs, Symptoms and Risk Factors

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week Sept. 9-15, the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare is holding a free webinar, “Stories from Survivors: A Primer on Suicide Prevention” on Wednesday, Sept. 12 , 2:00 to 3:30 pm EDT.

The webinar features powerful, firsthand stories of suicide survivors and family members who have lost loved ones to suicide. Kevin Hines is one of only 31 in history to survive a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge. Major General Mark Graham and his wife Carol lost their two young sons,  — one to suicide and one in combat — and discuss the different types of battles they fought. Cheryl Sharp made 9 suicide attempts by age 24 but is an “active and engaged participant in a life worth living” today. Webinar attendees will hear from these survivors and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Attendees also will hear about a novel program, Mental Health First Aid, which helps to better understand the common signs, symptoms, and risk factors for depression and other mood disorders that increase the risk of suicide and offers an action plan to to resolve crises.

More than 36,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide every year, about one every 16 minutes. Approximately 90 percent of people who complete suicide have a mental disorder. There are four male suicides for every female suicide, but three times as many females as males attempt suicide.
